Restless Hearts Need Truth
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with hearts that need to be reminded of what is already true — that You have been good to us. Not good measured by comfort and ease, but good in the deepest and most lasting sense of the word. Good in ways we have noticed and ways we have not. With the psalmist we speak to our own souls today: "Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you" (Psalm 116:7). Still our restless hearts, Lord, and let that truth sink in.
We confess that we are far too quick to forget. Forgive us for the times we have rehearsed our worries more than we have rehearsed Your faithfulness. Your Word calls us to "forget not all His benefits" (Psalm 103:2) — so today we choose to remember.
Lord, You have been good to us in ways too numerous to count. You knit us together and called us fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). You gave Your only Son that we might have life abundantly (John 3:16, John 10:10). You have forgiven every sin, redeemed every failure, and crowned us with love and compassion (Psalm 103:3–4). These are not small things, Lord. These are everything.
Your goodness has met us in the ordinary moments just as surely as in the extraordinary ones — in daily provision, in people who love us, in mercy that greets us fresh every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23). "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights" (James 1:17). Open our eyes to see Your goodness in the gifts we have grown too familiar to notice.
When fear whispers that things are falling apart, remind us of how many times You have held things together. When doubt suggests You have forgotten us, remind us that You have engraved us on the palms of Your hands (Isaiah 49:16). "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives" (Psalm 23:6) — not occasionally, not when we deserve it, but all the days.
Speak to our souls today and call our restless hearts back to rest — because You have been good to us. You are good to us. And You will be good to us all the days of our lives and into eternity.
"Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you" (Psalm 116:7). We believe it, Lord. Help us to live like we do.
