The Secret Place

by Brenna Milleville  · October 30, 2026

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today drawn by a deep and holy longing — not simply to know about You, but to truly know You. To step away from the noise and the rush and find You in the quiet place where souls are stilled and hearts are made whole. Your Word beckons us there: “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). That is where we want to live, Lord. Not just visit — but dwell.

The secret place is not a location — it is a relationship. It is the sacred and intimate space between a child and their Father, where masks come off and pretending ends. Where we do not have to perform or impress or arrive with everything figured out. We simply come as we are — weary or joyful, broken or overflowing — and You meet us there. Just as Jesus Himself would “withdraw to desolate places and pray” (Luke 5:16), teach us to treasure that same communion. To guard it. To return to it daily as the very source of our strength.

Father, forgive us for how easily we let the secret place grow crowded. We fill our mornings with noise before we have sat with You. We reach for our phones before we reach for Your Word. We rush into our days without first anchoring ourselves in Your presence. And then we wonder why we feel scattered, anxious, and dry. Draw us back, Lord. Remind us that “one thing is necessary” (Luke 10:42) — and that one thing is You.

Lord, it is in the secret place that You speak most clearly. Not always in the dramatic or the loud, but in the still small voice that Elijah heard after the wind and the earthquake and the fire (1 Kings 19:12). Teach us to be still enough to hear You. To sit long enough to let Your Word move from our minds into our hearts. “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) — not still out of passivity, Lord, but still out of holy trust that You are near and You are speaking.

It is in the secret place that we are truly known — and truly loved. “You have searched me, Lord, and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar” (Psalm 139:1–2). There is nowhere we can hide from You, and what a mercy that is — because to be fully known by You is to be fully safe. You see every fear we carry into that quiet place and You are not overwhelmed. You see every doubt and You do not turn away. You simply love us — completely, faithfully, forever.

Draw us deeper, Lord. Beyond the surface and into the shelter. Beyond the hurry and into Your presence. For “those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31) — and the secret place is where that strengthening happens.

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). We are coming home, Lord. Meet us there.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
