New Year, New Me?
It’s that time of year, again. A time of reflecting on the past year. A time of making resolutions to better the year to come.
Question: How many resolutions have you made that you’ve actually stuck to? I know for me, I start out with all the motivation, the absolute best of intentions—and it lasts… maybe a month?
So, what can we do instead of making goals we know we won’t stick to? Instead of intentions that we promise to make last all year long, try something with a shorter lifespan—like a Fresh Start checklist! Here’s two things to make your future-self have an easier time, in the new year.
- Declutter (hold on, stay with me). As a fellow ‘I despise cleaning’ gal myself, I understand how un-fun this suggestion feels. But what I’ve found that helps avoid my feeling of overwhelm at such a big task… is to make the task smaller. Pick an area that frustrates you the most. Maybe that Everything Drawer you pretend doesn’t exist. Or maybe that pile of “I’ll deal with it later”—you know which one I mean. We all have one!
Then? Only spend fifteen minutes a day tackling it. (Yep, you read that right). Fifteen minutes is roughly the length of a 5 song playlist. Or part of an audiobook chapter. Or half a tv episode. Totally doable, right?
- Create a quiet corner oasis for yourself—and actually use it. If you’re anything like me, you struggle with setting aside time for creative activities that are just for fun. Too many other things take priority. But making time for ourselves is just as important. Even if it’s during a slow sunrise after waking up, or in the few minutes before settling in for bed.
Luckily, you can do all of these favors for your future self in our incredibly comfy Powered by Jesus and Coffee raglan shirt design! Let this New Year, New You, fresh start be a cozy one!
The declutter one is a great idea and I’ve been tackling portions of it for several months based on my family you’ve got too many collections and too much stuff sitting around. First I did my white rose collection for my college sorority. Then I did my wire winged angel collection, kept only the best ones and gave 80% of them to a niece. And this year I just finished giving away all the extra Christmas stuff I had when we downsized from a 6,000 sq ft house to a 4,000 sqft house to now a 2300 sqft house. Took me 8 years to get it all given away but everything left in the attic is stuff we’ll use every year as long as I’m around. I reduced my antique glass collection from 4 cabinets to 3 cabinets but that is one that the family will just have to deal with after I’m gone. It’s been hard but I’ve done it in stages and the family appreciates it.
I do have a quiet corner as well as my sewing shop where I work and I love it. My office is a 40 step commute from my house. While I haven’t gotten rid of fabric or supplies because it is my business and I use it a bunch, I have organized where it is more easily accessible and I can find anything someone asks for. Today my husband needed blue vinyl for a project he was working on. I knew I had some but it took me a bit to dig down to where I thought it was in the fabric cabinet but I found it I less than 5 minutes. He was actually impressed. My quiet time in the morning is at the dining room table before anyone gets up and have a 15×25 sewing room to myself if I need to get away. So I think I’m doing descent on those areas and that your ideas are spot on. Get a few things cleaned up and free yourself!
