Because He Is Faithful: 4 Steps to Build Our Trust in His Faithfulness
“Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with Thee...”
That old hymn is one of my favorites because it declares an important truth that we can cling to in difficult times. God is faithful, no matter how I’m feeling or what my circumstances look like. It’s a truth I struggle to believe when disappointments come or things don’t turn out the way I had planned.
Have you ever felt this way? Here are some steps we can take to build our trust in His faithfulness:
Read about God’s faithfulness.
There are so many stories in the Bible that can encourage us with the truth that God keeps His promises! From beginning to end, God follows through and His faithfulness is unfailing. Strengthen your faith by reading the accounts of Moses, Joseph, Abraham, Esther...the list goes on and on!
Reflect on His faithfulness to you.
When has God shown up in your life? We so often forget the good things He has done and lose our focus during the hard times. He is faithful even when we are not; His faithfulness to us in the past should give us hope for the future. Make a list of the times God has been faithful to you, and keep it handy for when you need a reminder.
Remember His promises.
Sometimes God speaks into our lives, but the promises He makes are not immediately fulfilled. As time goes by and God seems to be taking His sweet time, we can begin to question what we heard or doubt that it will happen. If you’re in the waiting period, you’re not alone. Waiting is often a way God prepares us for what He has for us, so we need to wait with purpose - believing God will do what He said, when the time is right.
Respond to Him in worship.
One of the best ways I work through feelings of doubt and uncertainty is through worship. Singing songs that proclaim truths about God’s character helps me to claim the words for my own life. It brings me to a place of surrender and peace, even in the midst of a storm. I believe the Holy Spirit ministers to our troubled hearts when we come before Him in an attitude of humility, with our spirits postured to receive a word from Him.
Keep pressing on, believing that God has good things in store for you. “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23
